This website loaded REALLY slow for me.  Which isn’t a good sign for a project dedicated to testing network speeds :D

But, when the page finally loaded, the tools they offer sound great.  I can’t wait to test these at home.

Measurement Lab was founded by the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute, the PlanetLab Consortium, Google Inc. and academic researchers.

http://www.measurementlab.net/measurement-lab-tools.html

Use tools running on M-Lab to test your Internet connection.

  • Network Diagnostic Tool

Test your connection speed and receive sophisticated diagnosis of problems limiting speed.

  • Glasnost

Test whether BitTorrent is being blocked or throttled.

  • Network Path and Application Diagnosis

Diagnose common problems that impact last-mile broadband networks.

  • DiffProbe (coming soon)

Determine whether an ISP is giving some traffic a lower priority than other traffic.

  • NANO (coming soon)

Determine whether an ISP is degrading the performance of a certain subset of users, applications, or destinations.

More specific results for image searches, thanks to Google.

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/12/new-search-by-style-options-for-google.html

So some time ago we launched face search, which lets you limit your search results to only images containing face…

More recently we also rolled out photo search, which limits results to images that contain photographic elements, ignoring many cartoons and drawings which may not be useful to you…

Today we’re pleased to extend this capability to clip art and line drawings…

Tasks
Keep track of what you need to do with a lightweight task list right inside of Gmail. Just click and type to add new tasks, convert emails into tasks, and (most satisfyingly) check them off as you’re done. Once you turn on this Labs feature, look for the Tasks link to the left of your inbox under Contacts.

Text Messaging in Chat
Send SMS text messages right from Gmail. You chat from your comfy computer and reach your friends on the go; they get your messages as texts and can peck out replies on their little keyboards.

To get started with these Labs features and more, click Settings and go to the Labs tab. Then select “Enable” next to the features you want to turn on and click “Save Changes.” Learn more

Very cool.  Also a reminder that you’re never safe and some hacker somewhere will rob your entire bank account!

http://www.pendriveapps.com/2008/12/09/password-unmask-unmask-hidden-passwords/

Password Unmask enables a user to Unmask Hidden Passwords (Passwords shadowed by asterisks etc) on almost any Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP program. Use it to reveal any passwords you may have lost or forgotten. More importantly, this Portable Password Unmasking tool can be stored and run from a portable device such as a USB Flash Drive. Please note that this Password Revealer will not work on most applications in Windows Vista.

Google’s SearchWiki

A tool that lets you re-order, note, and add to your own search results.  This doesn’t effect how other people see their search results, but you can at least customize your own (while you’re logged in).  Hmmm, how useful will this really be?  It might be useful if they categorize people to give certain groups better results for what they’re most likely searching for.  Thoughts?

This program’s called Snaptell.  You take a picture of an item on your iPhone, it finds a book/cd/dvd/game with cover art that looks similar.  Pretty quickly, too.  Gives you useful information like Barnes & Noble, Wiki, Google, Yahoo.

Flash on Andoird/iPhone

An interesting article posted by androidguys.com relating to Flash, Andoid and the iPhone.

http://androidguys.com/?p=2824

“Alongside Adobe’s Kevin Lynch, Andy showed Flash running within a web browser, signaling to the world that Android is ready to handle the technology.”

“Speaking of, here’s what Wired has to say today.  In an article called “Why Apple Will Never Permit Adobe Flash on the iPhone“, Brian X. Chen posits that Flash is so rich and full featured that it could ultimately create apps that take run through the internet, in turn, take away from Apple’s bread and butter, the App Store.”
